NaPoWriMo Day 23

I was thinking about how as a species we have gone from having too little access to information, to having a surfeit of it. Along the way, precious little has been done to teach us how to critically assess everything we consume now. This poem is about that. Enjoy!

A Brief History of Information Overload

Our story starts out long ago,

‘Ere once upon a time,

Before there was a pen or page,

To capture my poor rhyme.

We shared our wisdom through our tales,

In flick’ring firelight.

Yet when we passed, much that we knew,

Was lost back to the night.

So passed one hundred thousand years,

Without the written word,

So much of what was gained was lost,

Knew only what was heard.

Then finally, some marks were made,

That could mean something more,

Ideas now could be preserved,

Much better than before.

We climbed more quickly up the hill,

Of knowledge than before,

There still were those who’d hold us back,

Said we should not know more.

They would control all of the words,

Keep them from common reach,

The worthy meaning powerful,

The only ones they’d teach.

They did succeed and much was lost,

Yet still we persevered,

For people having knowledge was,

The only thing they feared.

And then one day, a great breakthrough,

One that would change the game,

A grand machine for making books,

Ten thousand all the same.

The time had come, our knowledge could,

Belong to anyone.

Still, some would seek to hold us back,

Frightened, but not yet done.

Clung desperately and terrified,

To power they had known,

Sought to control ideas for,

They had none of their own.

Still on we struggled up the hill,

Of knowledge ‘til at last,

We paused a moment to look back,

To understand our past.

Saw most had suffered needlessly,

So some could have it all,

For some time then our only goal,

To organize their fall.

But they don’t fall, they just change names,

Change how the game is played,

No longer try to hide the words,

Ten billion works displayed.

They would drown us in all the things,

We did for so long seek,

Then we like children gorged ourselves,

Soon found our minds too weak.

Could not contain, could not conceive,

The knowledge we now had,

Then unsupported, unprepared,

Went slowly, slightly mad.

And then they gave us more and more,

Consume, consume they’d say,

No time to think, no time to judge,

That just gets in the way.

You know you want to know some more,

Just Google and you’ll see,

More answers to more questions than,

You ever thought could be.

There is a problem here and now,

The worst that we have faced,

We need to find the gems within,

The years and tons of waste.

We need to learn to think again,

Not parrot what we hear,

Use knowledge to untie the knots,

To liberate from fear.

We must now be more critical,

Of things that people say,

Not of the person saying it,

Then we would lose our way.

No, we must understand the way,

Of thinking critically,

For only then, we’ll understand,

How to make our minds free.

Come sit beside my flick’ring fire,

Come listen to my voice,

For unlike those who would control,

I’m offering a choice.

I won’t be mad if you don’t think,

The same way that I do,

I am just offering a thought,

The rest is up to you.

Cheers,

NaPoWriMo Day 9

Again today, I allowed my mind to wander off and write this without too much direction from me.  Sometimes it surprises me with what it comes up with.  Enjoy!

Something To Think About

As I sit down to write this verse,

My mind goes wand`ring free,

Then it returns, comes back at last,

It seems to say to me…

Closely attend and listen well,

To wisdom I did glean,

For we are blessed more than we know,

You`ll see just what I mean.

You sit here and you write these lines,

No real cares it`s true,

You are well fed, and housed and clothed,

No one is threatening you.

Sure you`ve some problems, don`t we all,

But none existential,

You may not have all that you want,

But more than essential.

I don`t say this to put you down,

Or make you feel small,

I`d only hope you`d understand,

To some, you have it all.

A spouse, a kid, a house, a dog,

And so much more than that,

You`ve never faced a winter yet,

Without a decent hat.

You`ve always had enough to eat,

Though maybe not ideal,

I know except sometimes by choice,

You`ve never missed a meal.

Sure you`ve been bullied, beaten up,

Bad actors seen your share,

You`ve never held a friend who`s shot,

Begged God in des`prate prayer.

We live in an oasis here,

So sheltered we`ve gone blind,

To so much in the world around,

It overwhelms the mind.

As my mind talked, I promised I`d,

Take some time every day,

To focus on how blessed I am,

In every single way.

Cheers,

NaPoWriMo Day 5

So, the area I live in is currently in the grip of a massive, late season ice storm. Today’s poem is in recognition of this and looks at the dangers of climate change and our role in it. Enjoy!

Anthropocene

Ice yet lies thick upon the ground,

Though winter’s in the past,

Now any day the spring will come,

This mis’ry cannot last.

Yet ice still clings to every branch,

And turns the roads to glass,

But soon enough this all will melt,

Replaced by sweet, green grass.

And still the ice yet thicker grows,

What if this is the year?

The winter holds on just too long,

What will we eat my dear?

Ice covered fields, as yet unthawed,

Too late to plant a crop,

You think this just a farmer thing,

Wait ‘til you try to shop!

The ice is just our weather here,

Elsewhere it’s floods and drought,

With wildfires burning free,

Can be but little doubt.

This ice you see is just one face,

Of what our choices bought,

Now look in terror ‘round the globe,

What our own hands have wrought.

This ice will melt, do not despair,

The end is not yet writ,

We yet may change our future path,

If we but find the wit.

Yet even though the ice will melt,

Don’t think that all is well,

If we refuse to change our ways,

That tale’s too sad to tell.

NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 27

Today is the 27th of May here in Ottawa and it is snowing steadily and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. This is more than a little unusual. A few flakes, a mini flurry sure. Not uncommon you say. But this isn’t that. This is uncommon for this time of year. It gave rise to today’s poem.

Look What We’ve Done

Though it is spring and crocus bloom,

The snow comes falling down.

To blanket once more all in white,

And in it’s stillness drown.

I will not rant, the weather curse,

For nature’s not to blame.

This one’s on us, the life we choose,

Yes humans are to blame.

We have been told, for years and years,

What we are headed for.

We’ve seen the signs, they’re everywhere,

But chosen to ignore.

But now the snow, and not a bit,

Enough to make a point.

That we have buggered up the world,

Put nature out of joint.

But we don’t want to see that truth,

So some excuse will make.

The climate is a complex thing,

And “facts” easy to fake.

And all the while, the snow comes down,

Soon summer fires burn.

While we go on the way we have,

And greenhouse gases churn.

So weep not for the crocus now,

Blooms lost beneath the snow.

Weep for the children yet to come,

And all they will not know.

NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 21

If you have been reading my entries so far this year, you will know that I love nature. So when I look at what we do to it and our wholesale destruction of it, I get pretty depressed. But it’s not hopeless. There are much smarter people than I who are working at ways to undo some of the harm we have done and minimize it going forward. I can only hope we can find a way forward for all life on the Earth, not just the human parts of it.

The Time Is Now

I feel the earth within my bones,

In my blood flows the sea.

I am the green and growing land,

It’s creatures living free.

I am the burning desert sands,

The ancient glacier’s ice.

I am the mighty lion’s roar,

And scampering of mice.

Yes I am nature, I am all,

The things you should embrace.

But do it soon. No! Do it now!

These treasures can’t replace.

I am the silent island there,

Beneath a rising sea.

A silence spreading everywhere,

When you have murdered me.

It’s not too late, there still is time,

To change what fate we choose.

But though there’s time, there is not much,

And surely none to lose.

So make the choice and take a step,

Toward that better way.

Just have the faith to make the change,

We’ll see a better day.

NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 16

I was talking with a friend the other day and they commented on how much worse the world has become since we were young. (Yep, I’m that kind of old man who sits and talks about such things.) I said I don’t think the world is getting worse. I think we are just exposed to a lot more of it, a lot more quickly. It’s up to us, how much of it we internalize.

Today’s poem is about that.

All The News That’s Fit To Internalize

I dream of waking up someplace,

So far from anywhere.

There’s no bad news of any kind,

Too far to ship it there.

Imagine how sweet life could be,

No constant doom and gloom.

How bright your days, how light your soul,

If we gave fear no room.

I do not seek a perfect life,

A life devoid of pain.

I only want to step away,

‘Til you and I remain.

Then I would know these joy and fears,

Of mine are really mine.

And not some outside aggregate,

From TV and online.

Now as you live your life recall,

Life’s not dark as they say.

No matter how much dark is pushed,

Into your mind each day.

I have not found that someplace where,

Bad news cannot reach me.

Instead each day, I try to choose,

Just what my soul will see.

If I can learn to limit dark,

And elevate the light.

Then I will know more peaceful days,

And better sleep each night.

NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 14

Obviously, I didn’t get this finished last night. But hey, here it is anyway. It’s all about the world we have to live in and changing it into the world we want to live in.

On Not Being A Greedy Supervillain

I wonder just how far we’ll go,

And how we will get there.

Or if we’ll stagnate where we are,

Will anybody care?

The future is not guaranteed,

There’s nothing carved in stone.

If we’d survive we must change now,

For our sins must atone.

Because we’ve thought, we’re all that counts,

We’ve made a hash of things.

Now mend we must our broken ways,

Before the last bird sings.

Instead of taking all we can,

Perhaps just what we need.

Instead of paving everything,

Perhaps should plant a seed.

We hear of corporate greed so much,

And evil billionaires.

But stock in greed is limitless,

We all deserve some shares.

It’s every time we’ve asked for more,

When we have all we need.

We’re all about that new TV,

Not hungry mouths to feed.

We gripe and grouse ’bout produce price,

Sell farms to subdivide.

Can’t stand the cities that we built,

So in our suburbs hide.

So now the question where and when,

And just how far we’ll go.

Is answered by our actions which,

Shape where all this will go.

So take the time to think it through,

The bigger picture see.

And make the choice to make the world,

The place that it could be.

Go take some coins and drop them in,

That homeless person’s hat.

If you could spare a little time,

Perhaps could stop and chat.

It’s little acts of kindness which,

Will add up over time.

It’s taking less and giving more

To live a life sublime.

So change yourself and change the world,

And maybe it will spread.

Perhaps someone will see and they,

Won’t take but give instead.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

NaPoWriMo 2021 Day 09

A lot of ink, both physical and digital has been devoted to the evils personal tech devices of late. I’m more a proponent of balance than banishment. Make better choices. That’s what I’m striving for.

What Is Light Without The Dark?

The constant light, is always there,

It seeps in through the seams.

There’s nowhere that I’m free of it,

Even my darkest dreams.

Light finds me there, and sears my eyes,

I beg for some respite.

But there is none, it never fades,

Dim yet eternal light.

Five billion screens, each one aglow,

Dark never stood a chance.

Now day and night are just the same,

We’ve stilled the ancient dance.

And though our screens give constant light,

We see much less by far.

Than when our eyes looked up to seek,

The brightest, clearest star.

By giving all our time to this,

Thing there within our hand.

We’ve lost the will to look beyond,

And try to understand.

But don’t forget that screen is just,

A tool that we can use.

Don’t blame the thing, but blame the choice,

And then more wisely choose.

Now choose to close that screen sometimes,

Enveloped in the night.

For darkness is essential to,

Appreciate the light.

NaPoWriMo Day 26

So…. my muse appears to have taken somewhat of a sabbatical. I’m way behind on this with just two days to catch up. Without further ado…

On The Necessity For Space Exploration

The black so deep there is no end,

This is the road we take.

There’s all we need, all we could want,

And so this trip we make.

We claw our way up from this well,

Regardless of the cost.

The future of our race at stake,

We go or all is lost.

It may not end tomorrow night,

And prob’ly not next year.

But end it will, there is no doubt,

Each day brings it more near.

So we must go traverse the black,

Far from our childhood home,

Ensure the future of our race,

To far, and strange worlds roam.

You say there’s so much to do here,

To solve all of our woes.

The money that we spend on space,

Is better spent on those.

The truth is this it matters not,

How grand we make things here.

If this is where our race must end,

It’s all for naught I fear.

So let us go back to the moon,

From there go on to Mars.

And in some far unknown year,

Find our path to the stars.

NaPoWriMo Day 19

Once again, I am writing a day behind. It seems to be my new standard, but at least it’s done. Only eleven more to go.  Today’s offering is about believing in your dreams regardless of what “everybody knows”.

On What Is Impossible

It’s true that wonders never cease,

More happen every day.

Impossible is just a word,

Those with no vision say.

Next month SpaceX will launch a ship,

With astronauts to space.

Impossible so many said,

No way they’ll win that race.

In Mexico a neighbourhood,

Of 3D printed dreams.

Impossible or so they thought,

Quite possible it seems.

A place where are all are free to live,

And be just who they are.

Impossible? I pray it’s not,

Still sometimes seems so far.

Eight billion mouths and more to feed,

Then better crops design.

“Impossible! I’ll never eat,

those GMOs malign!”

For every wonderous thing we do,

There’s shouting from the wings.

“Impossible! Impossible!

You cannot do these things!”

The solvers and the dreamers know,

This secret sweet and true.

Impossible is just a word,

Let none take that from you.
