NaPoWriMo Day:26. For My Angel Lynn

NaPoWriMo post 26 is a love poem for awesome lover Lynn. Thank you so very much my angel.

Enjoy!

I dreamed of love one summer night
And then when I awoke.
I realized it was a dream
That’s when my heart was broke.

For years I thought that was the end
My dream now never true.
But I know now the dream was real
Now that I have found you.

You’re everything I dreamt you’d be
That night so long ago.
I am so blessed to share your life.
So blessed you love me so.

I cannot thank you near enough
For all you do for me.
Although I pray that these few words
Will somehow help you see.

I’m so much more than I would be
Without you in my life.
I am so blessed in every way
To have you as my wife.

Cheers, Winston

NaPoWriMo Day:24 The Dragon And The Boy

A poem about a dragon, a boy, and how not eating visiting adolescents can actually make a dragon’s life easier… also, real heroes don’t steal dragon treasure.

Enjoy!

The Dragon And The Boy

The dragon sleeps upon his hoard
Beneath a mountain old.
While every town breeds heroes who
Would seize the dragon’s gold.

So every year in summertime
Some fool comes out to try.
They come for glory or for gold
But all come but to die.

A boy lives in a nearby town
In poverty and woe.
He knows to save his people he
Must to the mountain go.

He seeks no glory and no fame
It’s not a path he’d choose.
But famine stalks the ones he loves
He’s nothing left to lose.

He is quite young still just a lad
But fear, he knows it not.
He’s seen such horrors innocence
Is something long forgot.

He travels on through day and night
At last he nears his goal.
There high upon the mountainside
An ancient, ebon hole.

As he climbs toward the lair
He takes a look around.
He sees that bones, half melted blades
Lie scattered on the ground.

The dragon stirs and lumbers out
From his bejeweled lair.
For he has sensed the boys approach
Up steep and final stair.

The boy has reached the place he sought
Prepares to face his fate.
He has not come to slay the beast
No lust for gold to sate.

The dragon steps into the sun
And stares down at the child.
He is intrigued and when he speaks
He tries to sound more mild.

“What brings you to my door young one?
Speak true or you shall die.”
“Oh dragon great I bring a gift.”
Is his shocking reply.

The child then extends his hand
And there for all to see.
A simple copper coin is what
His offering would be.

“In my town all are starving sir.
This coin our only one.
I do not seek your pity for
I know that you have none.

Just take the coin, it is not much
Please add it to your horde.
If years from now you look at it
Remember us my lord.”

The dragon thinks then he replies,
“I’ll honor your request.
But I would ask a boon as well.
I know you’ll do your best.

Please wait right here, I’ll be right back
There’s something I must get.”
He goes inside, brings back a chest
Which on a rock he set.

“Inside is all the coin you need
To make your small town great.
And all I ask is that you spread
The tale of your fate.”

The boy is so amazed that he
Gapes up at him in awe.
Sees finally the ancient scars
Some wounds still fresh and raw.

He weeps to see this ancient beast
Has suffered so much pain.
He vows to do his best to see
It never will again.

He takes the chest and journeys back
And saves his town so dear.
They aid the other towns around
Save them from doom so clear.

A boy lived in a nearby town
Has now become a man.
He’s keeps his oath and tells his tale
To everyone he can.

Those who were saved form Dragonguards
They ring the mountains round.
No weapons are allowed within
For that is dragon ground.

The dragon sleeps upon his hoard
Beneath the sun so bold.
While nearby towns breed heroes who
Still guard the dragon’s gold.

NaPoWriMo Day:22 Spare A Thought

My 22nd NaPoWriMo effort is in honor of Earth Day.

Earth Day

A vernal warmth is on the land
As round the seasons go.
On this small world we call Earth
The only home we know.

She gives to us all that we need
Trash is all we give back.
The water’s dead, the soil too
The very sky is black.

We take so much then take some more
We take until we die.
Well what if we gave back instead
At least we ought to try.

Try taking less reusing more
Perfection’s not the goal.
For every single, smallest thing
Helps heal her wounded soul.

Plant some flowers or plant a tree
Put feeders in your yard.
Leave the car and take a walk
It’s really not that hard.

The Earth she needs your help my friend
She needs your help to heal.
It’s easier to just not look.
That won’t make it less real.

So won’t you please come work with us?
The time is now at hand.
To take much less and give much more
It’s time to heal the land.

Cheer, Winston

NaPoWriMo Day: 19 Lucky In Love

Here we are at day nineteen of the NaPoWriMo challenge. Throughout this process as in everything, Lynn has been incredibly supportive of me. I realized that in amongst all the rest I had yet to write her a love poem. Today I would rectify that oversight.

Enjoy!

Lucky In Love

My love she is a wondrous girl
I’m lucky as can be.
She puts up with my whims and fits
And hasn’t murdered me.

I don’t know why she loves me so
But I’m one lucky guy.
My sweetheart is so good to me
Sometimes I almost cry.

When we’re in line while at the cash
She hugs me from behind.
I feel such love within that hug
It simply blows my mind.

She always finds the perfect gift
Wants nothing back it seems.
She shares her hopes and fears with me
As we build up our dreams.

A million times a million things
And millions more as well.
These are the reasons I am blessed
To in her sweet love dwell.

Cheers, Winston

NaPoWriMo Day: 10 My Puppydog

NaPoWriMo sees me changing gears yet again. Today is all about my dog Chester. Anyone who’s been reading this blog for a while will probably have seen him here before.

The other day I was sitting on my couch debating what to write my next poem about. As I was pondering, Chester shifted around on his bed to lie on my feet. This poem came out of that moment.

Enjoy!

My Puppydog

There is a puppy on my feet
As sweet as he can be.
We are the very best of friends
My puppy dog and me.

He’s always glad when I get back
He rushes there to greet.
If we’re gone long we always bring
Our puppy dog a treat.

He loves the snow and loves his walks
Loves napping in the sun.
A bunny chase, a nice car ride
My puppy dog finds fun.

We are so very lucky for
As puppy people know.
There’s no limit how much love
A puppy dog can grow.

NaPoWriMo Day:9 Movie Nights

I’m a huge movie nut. I love watching them, talking about them, and watching them again. Film snobs annoy me. I know what I like, but over the years I’ve learned the difference between “I don’t like that.” and “That’s bad.”

When I’ve had a crap day, or I’m not feeling well, a movie can take me out of myself for a little while. That’s an incredible gift. This is my thank you for all the laughs, jumps, tears and suspense.

Enjoy!

Movie Night

The lights go down the screen lights up
We settle in our seats.
There’s movement now and sudden noise
Our hands reach for our treats.

The picture starts we are amazed
Amused or terrified.
We laugh or scream or shout or stare
Sometimes some tears are cried.

There’s beauty there and horror too
To some it’s all just sleaze.
The wonder is it’s everything
Or anything you please.

Dragons, damsels, heroes bold
All on the screen appear.
With hope, despair and joy up there
So simple and so clear.

Take us away then bring us back
Show things we’ve never seen.
Show us wonders and delights
Upon the silver screen.

Then we go home and go to bed
Our dreams so vivid now .
Those dreams are fuelled by your gifts
So thanks please take a bow.

Poetry Challenge: Day 3 “The Cardinal”

Here is entry number three for NaPoWriMo. Today’s is a little more pastoral. Don’t worry though, I’ve got something a little special cooking for tomorrow. In the meantime,… Enjoy.

The Cardinal

So brilliant in my dreary yard
Before the green of spring.
The Cardinal is back again
A dazzling, scarlet thing.

Here he grabs an old dead twig
There some dry, brown grass.
He tries a dozen different bits
To find one that will pass.

You see he’s building up his nest
To show his love so pure.
He must succeed to claim his prize
Brown, scarlet and demure.

So now he works to build the best
This bright spot in my day.
And as he works the world turns
To green from dullest grey.

Merry Christmas To All!

I know it’s early yet (at least where I am) but I probably won’t have a chance to post later. I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

I know that there are many, many people out there who don’t celebrate Christmas. That’s fine. I don’t need you to believe the same things I do. Heck most days I don’t believe the same thing from one day to the next.

There are a few things I believe… It’s never a bad thing to be nice to a random stranger… It’s even better to be nice to someone you know… Small children and dogs love absolutely… They are guideposts God put here to show us the way… Christmas is the Super bowl of nice… Get it right, and you’re a hero… Fumble, and you’ll never hear the end of it.

Having said all that, here’s what I believe more than anything else this time of year. Get together with your family, friends and loved ones. Forget the petty wrong and feuds that drive us apart.

Remember how lucky you are to have these people in your life. That love and friendship is the true treasure of Christmas. It’s the one that’s going to bring you the most joy for years to come.

Have a Merry Christmas To All!

Cheers, Winston

A Quick Personal Note

image

Those of you who follow this blog may recall I currently work at Fido selling cell phones. I recently had to spend an evening (on my day off) attending training for the launch of the new Windows 8 phones. Everyone gathered at a downtown hotel and attended presentations from Microsoft and various phone manufacturers.

I didn’t learn too much I couldn’t have picked up online, but it was a fun night out with the team. After the presentations were finished, we went upstairs to the lounge for drinks (our company wasn’t allowed to partake of the free alcohol) and socializing with people from other districts. Overall, it was a good time but I was thinking I might have preferred spending my night off at home with my family. Turns out I was wrong.

After the meeting, everyone at our company was invited to submit the top three tips we had picked up for selling the new phones. We were to submit them by email for a chance to win a new phone. I submitted my tips just to be “a team player”, then forgot about it. Until this morning.

I was doing some housework this morning when my phone buzzed. I checked it and saw a new email from work. The email listed the three winners of new phones, and much to my surprise, my name was on the list!

My new phone is on back-order, but that’s okay. It’s on its way, and that’s what counts. For the idly curious among you, it’s a Nokia Lumia 920 Windows 8 phone. VERY sweet!

Made for another bright spot in an already bright week. “The HOBBIT” last night, awesome new phone today… who knows what tomorrow might bring 😉

“The HOBBIT” Rules!

image

My friend Jason came through for me again. I told him I planned to go see “The HOBBIT” on my birthday next week and he called a friend and hooked me up with passes to the press screening last night. (Thanks again J, you ROCK!)

I don’t do spoilers, so I won’t give away any plot points. I will say that I had some concerns going in. Chief among them the question of how to expand a single (slim) book into three movies. Asuming that the next two are the equal of this one, the answer is: brilliantly…. for the most part. There were a couple of bits I wasn’t totally on side with, but not enough to spoil the overall experience.

The much hyped 3D / 48 frames per second technology rendered the trademark visuals just that much more luscious. New Zealand is still the most beautiful star in the film. The Weta teams, both virtual and physical are once again clearly at the top of their game. Overall production quality is still astonishingly high and one expects nothing less.

I won’t say any more on it until it has been in wide release for a while. Suffice to say, I plan to see it again while it is in theaters. Then begins the long wait for part two.

Long story short… The “HOBBIT” Rules!

Cheers, Winston
