NaPoWriMo 2021 Day 8

Since April is National Poetry Month, I try to do at least one spring themed entry per year. Here in Canada, winters are cold and long and spring is much anticipated. It is probably my favourite season.

For Love of Spring

To watch the swelling of a bud,

Then watch the leaf unfold.

The wonder of a world reborn,

From winter’s deadly cold.

The piping of returning birds,

Geese calling overhead.

With crocus blooms a welcome splash,

Of colour in their bed.

The days grow warm but no too hot,

The nights are still quite chill.

I love the spring, I always have,

And prob’ly always will.

I watch the swelling of a bud,

The bloom which opens there,

It’s beauty overcomes my heart,

All I can do is stare.

For spring is come, at last arrived,

All dormant things awake.

To stretch and seek this vernal sun,

All beauty now to make.

And I, eyes filled with wonder walk,

See wonders everywhere.

It’s spring and beauty fills my world,

With light and joy so rare.

So bring the sun, then bring the rains,

Wash winter’s signs away.

Then paint the world in brighter shades,

I’m loving life today!

NaPoWriMo 2021 Day 5

Before anyone argues that their dog is the best one, I just want to say… Every dog is the best one that ever was. Not just dogs. Every pet that is loved by their owner is the best one that ever was. It’s not a competition… it’s all about the blessing!

Loving My Best Dog

This dog I see before me is,

The finest there could be.

It’s true because this friend is mine,

And so it’s true for me.

If I go out, he’s oh so thrilled,

When I walk through the door.

He wags so hard and jumps around,

Then rolls upon the floor.

Sometimes he’ll lie upon my feet,

To let me know he’s there.

And anytime I’m feeling sick,

Stays close to show his care.

He hates the heat, and loves the snow,

Loves AC more than me.

For anytime it’s hot outside,

Inside is where he’ll be.

He loves his Mommy just as much,

Her constant shadow now.

With all the love he gives to us,

There’s always more somehow.

He loves his snacks (a bit too much),

And napping in the hall.

Wants belly-rubs from all who pass,

But Aunty most of all.

He truly is the finest pup,

Best one that ever was.

And we are blessed, so truly blessed,

He gave his heart to us.

Cheers, Winston

(For Ducky, Chester and every dog who’s life I’ve been blessed to share. You are all the best dog ever!)

NaPoWriMo 2021 Day 2

My friend Jen turns fifty-five today. We’ve been friends for twenty years now… but that’s nothing. I met her through my wife who has been friends with her for fifty years! All of that made today seem like a great day to celebrate that friendship.

That One Friend

I wish that everyone could have,

A friend as true as you.

The world would be a better place,

Because of what they’d do.

A friend who’d always lift them up,

Who never put them down.

The one who’d love to see their smile,

Who’d understand their frown.

That friend who’s up for anything,

Who makes that thing more fun.

And down the road looks back and laughs,

At crazy things they’ve done.

You always put another first,

And think of yourself last.

Then brush off any thanks or praise,

Embarrassed ’til it’s past.

You love to share and talk and laugh,

It brightens any day.

You’re interested in everyone.

I guess you’re born that way.

So thanks my friend for being part,

Of our lives all these years.

You’ve shared our triumphs and defeats,

Our laughter and our tears.

Your friendship is the greatest gift,

A blessing through and through.

It’s true our lives are brighter far,

My friend because of you!

NaPoWriMo Day 25

So the second poem yesterday didn’t happen. But here is another one. Been dreaming about oceanfront homes lately. This verse is inspired by those dreams.

On The Call of the Oceanfront

The crashing waves, and rustling trees,

All sing me to my rest.

While insects drone and bullfrogs croak,

This lullaby’s the best.

Sing now to me my island home,

Though I’m so far away.

And guided by your song I swear,

I’ll get there one fine day.

But now there’s work and life to live,

So much that must be done.

‘Ere I can sit upon your beach,

Beneath the morning sun.

I feel the spray upon my skin,

From waves upon your shore.

For in my heart I’m always there,

In dreams forever more.

But now there’s work and life to live,

Before I’m there again.

And once I’m there, my dream fulfilled,

Forever I’ll remain.

NaPoWriMo Day 23

In my last poem, I mentioned the soundtrack of my life. Here is a little more on that idea.

On The Music Of Life

My keyboard and a cup of tea,

Some tunes to sooth my mind.

And as the music washes through,

My inner voice I find.

Now as the notes are flowing through,

All else begins to flee,

This is the power music holds,

It strips me down to me.

It matters not, what song it is,

It changes every day.

But in the silence of the sound,

I find the words to say.

Yes, music is my fav’rite drug,

It lets my soul take flight.

It frees me from life’s petty cares,

It’s what makes life all right.

When I am sad it lifts me up,

I’m lost it brings me home.

I’m happy then it laughs with me,

Travels with me as I roam.

My music is my place of peace,

Far from the world I know.

When everything is just too much,

Into the sound I go.

So thank you all to those who make,

All these songs that I hear.

You’ll never know how much I love,

This music I hold dear.

And now I lay me down to sleep,

Music plays all night long.

I drift away to peaceful rest,

Borne there on wings of song.

NaPoWriMo Day 22

So here is yesterday’s poem. The goal is to be current before I go to bed tonight. I’m back to work tomorrow so don’t want to have to write two poems while I’m allegedly working.

On The Importance Of Listening

The sound of waves upon a beach,

So soothing to my soul.

The rushing wind on granite hills,

Some sounds just make me whole.

A steady rain on roof of tin,

A loon’s long lonely call.

My puppy snoring next to me,

I love that most of all.

The sounds around define my world,

Each one part of my life.

Each nature sound, each city sound,

The laughter of my wife.

We take them all for granted and,

We never stop to think.

Our memories tied to certain sounds,

Until we feel that link.

The rumble of the thunder now,

The rain is pouring down.

I listen, really listen and,

Beneath it my cares drown.

It’s morning now, the storm has passed,

Sweet birdsong fills the air.

And I awake, revived, refreshed,

Storm-washed of every care.

I hear the soundtrack of my life,

With it’s rain and thunder.

Sirens, laughter, all the rest,

Blessed to hear this wonder.

NaPoWriMo Day 15

I was supposed to post this yesterday, but sometimes life happens. Another one will magically appear in due course. Hopefully before the end of the day 🙂

On Missing Nature

A long and winding country road,

A field of high, sweet hay.

Ten billion stars above my head,

To gaze at where I lay.

A lazy stream meanders through,

A wild wood nearby.

It flows down from the ancient hills,

Bare shouldered ‘gainst the sky.

I wander through the woods and hills,

Sip from a hidden spring.

With every step, much closer now,

To nature do I seem.

I pause to rest and start to doze,

Beneath a willow tree.

With gods of hills and woods and streams,

All watching over me.

This is a dream I often dream,

While urban life I live.

To capture just a part of this,

Who knows what I would give.

NaPoWriMo Day 12

It was a beautiful day today and I spent some time in my backyard watching the birds and squirrels and listening to the geese calling in the distance. I love the spring!

On The Beauty of Spring

Once more the air is filled with chirps,

Not heard for far too long.

Our migrant birds back home at last,

To share with us their song.

The squirrels chatter happily,

While dashing high above.

Now spring is here and all around,

The world is filled with love.

The trumpeting of inbound geese,

A welcome, joyous sound.

They lift my spirit and my soul,

Bring happiness unbound.

Now everywhere you look is green,

New flowers peeping out.

A sense of hope, of better days,

The winter’s done no doubt.

So raise your head and see the truth,

Each day a brand new start.

Now let the beauty and the warmth,

Of Springtime fill your heart.

Cheers, Winston

NaPoWriMo Day 10

As much as it makes my brain hurt sometimes and I really hate creative deadlines (I can’t function without them), I really love NaPoWriMo as it pushes me to flex my creative muscles. I also draw and paint and can’t think of anything more rewarding than when I get what’s in my head onto paper in a way that others can relate to.

On Creativity

Express yourself whatever way,

Write, paint, or talk or sing.

Or try a million diff’rent styles,

Find one that is your thing.

I choose to write this clumsy verse,

To say the things I wish.

Perhaps your art is to prepare,

Some super tasty dish.

Whatever lets somebody see,

The truth that is in you.

Whatever passion burns most bright,

To light the soul in you.

Too many live their whole life through,

Consumed by fear and doubt.

They never learn to see that spark,

One day it just goes out.

So write that song, or draw that cat,

Take pictures of the sky.

Embrace the voice inside of you,

Turn from your fear and try.

If someone is so unkind as,

To mock the thing you’ve done.

Please pity them, their spark has died,

To mock, their only fun.

Now put this down, pick up your brush,

Guitar, or mic or pen.

Whatever voice you use, your soul,

Will thank you in the end.

Cheers, Winston

NaPoWriMo Day 8

At least once each year I write a love letter to my angel Lynn. This poem is for the best and most perfect angel I could ever wish for.

On Love

Oh Lynn my love, my life is blessed,

Because you’ve made it so.

You don’t believe and that’s okay,

That’s why I let you know.

On my grey days, you are my sun,

To light and warm my life.

You are my joy, my hope, my peace,

My light, my love, my wife.

There’s seven billion souls or so,

Upon this rock we share.

You are the perfect one for me,

No other can compare.

I thank you love for all you do,

Love you for who you are.

You put up with my every fault,

Embrace my every scar.

I know you cannot see in you,

Perfection that I see.

But that’s okay, I know you are,

The perfect one for me.

Je t’aime mon ange. Plus que tu sais. Pour l’eternite… et plus encore.

Cheers, Winston
