NaPoWriMo Day 9

Well, today it’s back to the introspection thing.  Lynn found yesterday’s effort a tad unsettling.

Peopling

(or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Tolerate The Crowd)

Once upon a time there was,

a boy who never learned.

To be a boy like others were,

so all friendships he spurned.

He swore he needed no one but,

he knew it was a lie.

So all alone he lived his life,

no one to hear him cry.

There came a day, a turning point,

he knew it had to end.

The loneliness would claim his life,

his ways he had to mend.

So day by day and week by week,

he studied and he tried.

To learn to human like the rest,

and no more have to hide.

There’s things to learn by reading books,

and things you have to do.

And peopling is one of those,

that books can’t quite teach you.

He learned to talk to other folks,

he found they weren’t so bad.

In fact they all had fears like him,

but also joys they had.

He learned to face some of his fears,

and learned to find some joys.

And came to understand in life,

sometimes the world annoys.

He also found to his surprise,

he likes this life he’s made.

And best of all when peopling,

he’s finally unafraid.

NaPoWriMo Day 7

My wonderful wife Lynn has been listening to my poems this month and mentioned that I seem to be on a self-awareness kick. Apparently, she’s right (as she usually is).

What Price the Dream?

“Livin’ the dream.” you hear them say,

but at what price that dream?

The fancy house, the shiny car,

are they all that they seem?

We work and work to have nice things,

but things can’t hold your hand.

When all is said and all is done,

perhaps we’ll understand.

This time we have is all we have,

we spend it every day.

But in the end when it is gone,

there’s nothing we won’t pay.

But it’s too late when time is gone,

you cannot buy some more.

So all the things you spent it on,

are what your life was for.

Are you your house, your car, your toys?

Or hero to your kid.

When you look back what will you see?

Be proud of what you did?

So just make sure you spend it well,

on what you love the best.

And when it’s gone and you look back,

your choice will stand the test.

NaPoWriMo Day 5

Yes, I know that I’m posting this on day 6. At least it’s getting posted, so half-marks for that.

Be Here Now

We spend so much of every day,

caught up inside our head.

Dwelling still upon the past,

or planning far ahead.

But all the time we spend like that,

is time we are not here.

This present now is all we have,

and we should hold it dear.

Each time we think of all we’ve had,

we throw our now away.

And as we dream of what we want,

we miss out on today.

I do not say you should not plan,

or should forget the past.

Just do not give your life to them,

it’s now, be here at last.

Right now as you are reading this,

your mind is far away.

Thinking of all the other things,

that you will do today.

But you are here and it is now,

live in this time you’re in.

When you are with the ones you love,

then wandering’s a sin.

They are what is most important,

not what was said at work.

The person who is here with you,

is not your boss (That jerk!).

So don’t give past the power to,

destroy your now as well.

For re-living your pains each day,

is like a mini hell.

So be here now, be when you are,

take back your life today.

For here and now come round but once,

It’s where we all should stay.

NaPoWriMo Day 4

So Canada turns 150 this year! Here is my first tribute to the country that I am privileged to call home.

Canada 150

One hundred-fifty years ago,

my Canada began.

It’s dream of freedom and of peace,

a continent did span.

And now we stand here looking back,

at just how far we’ve come.

With some things we have come quite far,

and dropped the ball on some.

We are diverse, a varied lot,

who rarely can agree.

We argue, shout and brawl and such,

but no one shoots at me.

And half the time near half of us,

they want to leave the rest.

But then they slowly realize,

together, we’re the best.

So wave a flag and raise a pint,

to this grand land we share.

And if you doubt it is the best,

go try your luck elsewhere.

My Angel

Day three of NaPoWriMo. What to write today, that’s the question. Ah, I know….

You Are All I Need To See

I sit upon the shore and gaze,

out at the distant sea.

And think of all the places that,

I think I’d like to be.

But then I stop and start to think,

of all I have right here.

The life I’ve built, the home I have,

the one I hold so dear.

It’s true there’s wonders everywhere,

that I would love to see.

But there’s no joy that could compare,

to what you give to me.

I’d rather see your face each morn,

than see the Taj Mahal

For just one smile that lights your face,

I’d gladly skip it all.

So if I leave to see the world,

this much I promise you.

Where ere I go what ere I see,

each pass will be for two.

Return of the Poet

I’m actually a day late with this. I had planned a while ago to participate again in NaPoWriMo. Then totally zoned yesterday and forgot about it. Oops.

Here we go anyway!

The Return of the Poet

It’s April once again and I,

Begin to write anew.

To search throughout my cobwebbed mind,

Tell something that is true.

Those rhymes I’ve made and words I’ve spilled.

So oft upon the page.

Are scarcer and much slower found,

My brain now shows it’s age.

So here’s a truth from one who’s looked,

Unflinching at his days.

Don’t sit and wait, the time is now,

To grow, to change your ways.

For in the end with every choice,

Our soul is more defined.

So think before you speak or act,

There’s no chance to rewind .

NAPOWRIMO Day 22

My Springtime Ode

The freebird sits up in the tree,
And sings a freebird song.
And all the other birds join in,
And have a sing along.

A squirrel hears the song and stops,
And chatters out a line.
About the joys of nuts and such,
It really sounds quite fine,

A doe and fawn while grazing are,
Enchanted by the sounds.
Go running leaping through the grass,
In joyous, graceful bounds.

The grass is soft, the flowers bloom,
The sun shines down on all,
For spring is here, and summer soon,
Still months until next fall.

So lift your voice and join their song,
Shake off your winter ick.
And with a joyous shout proclaim,
“Of snow and cold l’m sick!”

Cheers, Winston.

NAPOWRIMO Day 20

Live To Read To Live

A simple book it can contain,
A world far away.
We slip between the pages and,
Into that place we stray.

The people in those stories seem,
Like ones we’ve always known.
And their adventures start to feel,
Just like they are our own.

Those characters we know and love,
They leave us wanting more.
And if they die the fans will beg,
“Repent, please write some more.”

If you read much you understand,
And if you don’t you should.
‘Cause books are like milk for your brain,
They sure do a mind good.

Cheers, Winston

NAPOWRIMO Day 19

Princess The Dog

This Princess is a lovely dog,
Well trained and sweet as pie.
Her family is in a fix,
Don’t need the reason why.

So Princess needs a place to stay,
We want a dog around.
Not ready yet to have our own,
A doggy friend we’ve found.

We go for walks and play some fetch,
Meet puppies in the park.
And when the neighbours dogs come out,
The Princess starts to bark.

It’s hard sometimes when I expect,
Her to be just like him.
But she is her own person with,
All her own moods and whim.

We’re lucky she has come to stay,
And live with us a while.
Each time she gazes in our eyes,
And shares her puppy smile.

Cheers, Winston

NAPOWRlMO Day 13

Dream Big, Work Hard

A dream is born a fragile thing,
To nurture and to grow.
A vision of what things might be,
It’s possible you know.

Hard work and drive and lots of faith,
A willingness to learn.
Stay true, hold fast, to your true wish,
To that for which you yearn.

There’s those will say, it cannot be,
You cannot do this thing.
You’re bound to lose, cannot succeed,
No matter what you bring.

I cannot promise you success,
That fact I can’t deny.
But guarantee your failure,
If you don’t even try.

Cheers, Winston
