NaPoWriMo Day 15

I know not everyone believes in the reality of climate change. I’ve read a lot on both sides of the question and to me it’s obvious that we’re having a huge impact on the planet. Wherever you sit on this debate, I hope you enjoy today’s poem.

OUR CHANGING WORLD

The climate’s changing very fast,

More than we thought it could.

The future’s looking different than,

Most of us thought it would.

I know there’s those who claim that all,

The climate data’s fake.

And nothing that is done by us,

Could any difference make.

But I have looked at this a lot,

And I just can’t agree.

The climate’s changing and the cause,

Comes down to you and me.

We love our cars, we love our trucks,

We love our SUVs,

We love to drive so who cares if,

They cut down all the trees.

We love our cities sprawling ‘burbs,

We’ll pave all of the farms.

And as we stand in flooded streets,

Claim we don’t cause these harms.

We’ve engineered some crops that can,

Both heat and drought resist.

But GMOs are “evil” so,

That research gets dismissed.

As millions starve because their land,

Can them no longer feed.

We let our surplus food just rot,

So much more than we need.

As deserts grow and forests shrink,

We multiply so fast.

‘Til all that’s left to eat is us.

Then see how long we last.

But disregard this poem ’cause,

It’s not what you would hear,

I’m just another scaremonger,

Who’s spreading pointless fear.

When the last lonely tree has died,

On dead and barren Earth.

Look then and see what we’ve done to,

The planet of our birth.

NaPoWriMo Day 6

As so often happens, I started this with nothing more than the opening line. There was no sense of narrative or where it was going. I find that some of my best writing is done that way. Let me know what you think 🙂

DREAMING TOMORROW

Now go to sleep and dream sweet dreams,

Of how the world will be.

Dream how we’ll make it better than,

The one that we now see.

A world where each and every one,

Loves who and how they will,

And those who disagree accept,

Instead of hate or kill.

Dream of world where all have food,

And somewhere warm to sleep.

Where “Helping”, “Caring” aren’t just words,

But promises we keep.

Now sleep my child and dream a world,

Where Nature’s free to thrive.

And humans understand their place,

‘Midst all that is alive.

Dream all these dreams and more my love,

But learn from us this fact.

To dream is fine but things won’t change,

Unless we choose to act.

NaPoWriMo Day 4

The great thing about National Poetry Month is it coincides with the start of Spring. Which guarantees at least one easy subject. When the wonder and beauty of this season stops inspiring me, I’ll hang up my keyboard.  In the meantime, there’s this…

A Song of Spring

The sweet touch of the Sun at dawn,

Oh how I miss it so.

All winter long the Sun is there,

Yet warmth we do not know.

Now Spring begins and so at last,

The cold will start to fade.

As nature wakes from her long sleep,

A joyous noise is made.

The birds return and leaves appear,

Soft grass grows green anew.

The nightly frost at last replaced,

With gentle morning dew.

Now raise your voice, the chorus join,

To praise returning Sun.

And look ahead to golden days,

Of summer filled with fun.

NaPoWriMo Day 24

So, it’s day 24 and it’s a beautiful sunny day. The birds are chirping and you can almost see the back garden coming back to life after it’s long winter sleep. I absolutely love the Springtime.

The Best Season

The shining sun, the singing birds,

you almost hear things grow.

That sense of rebirth and of hope,

I love the Springtime so.

The squirrels racing to and fro,

go leaping tree to tree.

Majestic flocks of geese above,

are such a sight to see.

As every swollen stream and creek,

is spreading out of hand.

They bring their freight of silt and soil,

renew the very land.

The insects buzz from bloom to bloom,

as blossoms show their face.

And all of life bursts forth at once,

to run the vernal race.

Some people love the summer beach,

and temperatures that soar.

But for me this rush of life,

is something I love more.

NaPoWriMo Day 20

Standing on a balcony at work today and watching the geese flying over the river. One of the surest signs that spring is here.

Spring!

It’s spring again the geese return,

and robins in the tree.

And like the sap the season brings,

life slowly back to me.

I bask in vernal warmth and soak,

up sunlight every day.

Enjoy the breeze upon my face,

outdoors I wish to stay.

I see the birds and bugs return,

I celebrate each one.

For every sign that spring is here,

is one more winter’s done.

And so I smile and share my joy,

with everyone I see.

Because for me the springtime’s best,

I’m sure you all agree.

NAPOWRIMO Day 22

My Springtime Ode

The freebird sits up in the tree,
And sings a freebird song.
And all the other birds join in,
And have a sing along.

A squirrel hears the song and stops,
And chatters out a line.
About the joys of nuts and such,
It really sounds quite fine,

A doe and fawn while grazing are,
Enchanted by the sounds.
Go running leaping through the grass,
In joyous, graceful bounds.

The grass is soft, the flowers bloom,
The sun shines down on all,
For spring is here, and summer soon,
Still months until next fall.

So lift your voice and join their song,
Shake off your winter ick.
And with a joyous shout proclaim,
“Of snow and cold l’m sick!”

Cheers, Winston.
