NaPoWriMo Day 7

Accentuate the positive! It took me years to learn this seemingly simple lesson. Too often we focus on the negative. We remember the guy who cut us off in traffic but forget the person who slowed down to let us merge. So much of our happiness comes down to growing what we feed. Feed the negative in your life and that’s what will grow. Feed the positive and see what happens!

As always, I’d love to hear what you think.

How You Take It, Is What You Make It

The day is done, the sun goes down,

I look up at the night.

The stars and moon, their beauty share,

With gentle silver light.

As I think back upon my day,

It’s very clear to see.

That whether it was good or bad,

Is always up to me.

The good is where you look for it,

Sometimes it’s hard to find.

But like the bad, it’s always there,

It’s how you set your mind.

It’s true sometimes there’s nasty things,

No good in them I know.

But focus more on positives,

And let the hurtful go.

This is the only power we,

Can truly call our own.

We choose the things we keep inside,

It’s up to us alone.

Let darkness go and light abide,

Keep peace within your soul.

And every day just practice this,

With happiness your goal.

When day is done and sun has set,

You look up at the night.

Look back upon the day you had,

And focus on the light.

NaPoWriMo Day 6

As so often happens, I started this with nothing more than the opening line. There was no sense of narrative or where it was going. I find that some of my best writing is done that way. Let me know what you think 🙂

DREAMING TOMORROW

Now go to sleep and dream sweet dreams,

Of how the world will be.

Dream how we’ll make it better than,

The one that we now see.

A world where each and every one,

Loves who and how they will,

And those who disagree accept,

Instead of hate or kill.

Dream of world where all have food,

And somewhere warm to sleep.

Where “Helping”, “Caring” aren’t just words,

But promises we keep.

Now sleep my child and dream a world,

Where Nature’s free to thrive.

And humans understand their place,

‘Midst all that is alive.

Dream all these dreams and more my love,

But learn from us this fact.

To dream is fine but things won’t change,

Unless we choose to act.

NaPoWriMo Day 2

ON GREED

Oh once upon a time a King,

Sat on a Royal Throne.

While at his feet a Royal hound,

Gnawed on a Royal bone.

The bone belonged, or so it seemed,

To the late former King.

To normal folk, it’s murder clear,

To them a different thing.

Now heavy weighs the new King’s head,

Beneath it’s crown ill-got.

He looks out on his courtiers there,

Can almost hear them plot.

He knows for once he plotted there,

Before the late King’s throne.

Imagines he can see the stain,

Of blood upon the stone.

The new King knows he may not rest,

Must vigilant remain.

Lest Royal blood, his own this time,

Shall flow free once again.

So listen to this tale my friend,

And learn it’s lesson well.

The prize not always worth the price,

‘Til it’s too late to tell.

Please reach not for that thing you want,

If it’s not yours to take.

The very truth of who you are,

That is the wagered stake.

I thought I was a better man,

Than he who sat here then.

But I have killed to gain this crown,

To keep it killed again.

This is not who I meant to be,

Yet now I play this part.

While conscience shrieks and tears it’s hair,

Deep in my darkened heart.

This wisdom is the boon I grant,

From my high stolen seat.

While poisons drip and daggers glint,

‘Mongst those with words most sweet.

Now that is all I have to share,

My kingly wisdom spent.

Ignore desire and walk away,

Your evil ways repent.

THE FUTURE

We see a shape but dimly there

Not certain what we see.

Project on it our hopes and fears,

No clue what it will be.

A thing of beauty it may be,

Yet certain we are not.

It may be brutal or bizarre,

May prove ice cold or hot.

The problem is we cannot know

Until we reach that time.

If it will be a paradise,

Or childbirth a crime.

What we must now remember most,

It will be what we make.

Our children and their children shall,

Pay then, what we now take.

So live your life with one eye now,

With one the future seek.

And leave to them a dream we built,

Not nightmare dark and bleak.

NaPoWriMo Day 26

So I’m more than a little behind again. But I’m still in there trying. This is the first of five that I have to post to make the target by month’s end.

Write Until I Die

I am behind again I fear,

this verse is some days late.

I offer no excuse to you,

’tis naught but simple fate.

My intent is naught but the best,

but that is not enough.

The gap ‘twixt wish and will is wide,

and leaping it is tough.

But I go on and try once more,

that is the vow I’ve made.

I by this verse renew that pledge,

for poems I have made.

Though it is hard there is time still,

to honour what I’ve said.

For there’s still breath and life and I,

shall write until I’m dead.

NaPoWriMo Day 15

Often we get so caught up in what we think we should be doing, or how we think the world should be, that we miss out on what is right in front of us.

The Prison of the Self

some walls a roof a floor and such,

do not a prison make

sometimes it’s in the mind alone

we dream we are awake.

and in the dream we know we dream

but still cannot break free

our minds refuse to let us go

until each scene we see.

we lock ourselves away inside

with people all around

but we have only what’s in us

our screams the only sound.

some walls a roof and floors and such

all there within our mind

we trap ourselves inside our heads

and every fear we find.

it’s different for everyone

no two are quite the same

become but ghosts that haunt our lives

can scarce recall our name.

So take yourself outside your head,

a wider world behold.

And live right now, not in regrets,

it’s your life go be bold!

NAPOWRIMO Day 30

Commonality

So I believe and know this truth,
I am the same as you.
Not in the way I speak or look
Nor in the things I do.

It’s what we are that is the same,
This we should keep in mind.
And understand the falseness of,
Divisions that you find.

What matter gender, race or creed,
We dream our dreams as one.
To love and laugh and live our lives,
Content when we are done.

So next time someone does you wrong,
Think on your own mistakes.
Remember  They are You and I,
Be kind for all our sakes.

Cheers, Winston

NAPOWRIMO Day 25

Don’t Mind My Mind

Oh what a wonder is the mind,
Its so full of fears and dreams.
It’s wider , higher, deeper and,
So much larger than it seems,

It’s every God that ever was,
And the Goddesses as well.
It’s every heaven ever dreamed,
And it gave us every hell.

The mind is what DaVinci used,
It let Rembrandt do his thing.
And minds wrote every single song,
That the greatest voices sing.

All the beauty and the horror,
All the things you love or ban.
Do not come from Gods or Devils,
Only from the minds of man,

So keep all your religions,
For from this I’m truly free.
Not controlled by your illusions,
What I am is up to me.

Cheers, Winston

NAPOWRlMO Day 13

Dream Big, Work Hard

A dream is born a fragile thing,
To nurture and to grow.
A vision of what things might be,
It’s possible you know.

Hard work and drive and lots of faith,
A willingness to learn.
Stay true, hold fast, to your true wish,
To that for which you yearn.

There’s those will say, it cannot be,
You cannot do this thing.
You’re bound to lose, cannot succeed,
No matter what you bring.

I cannot promise you success,
That fact I can’t deny.
But guarantee your failure,
If you don’t even try.

Cheers, Winston

NaPoWriMo Day Twenty-Nine

I asked my muse what to write about today, and she suggested the idea of….

Paying It Forward

An act of kindness once it’s done,
Can echo far and wide.
But that is not it’s true reward,
For that is felt inside.

Some do some grand, impressive act,
In hope of gaining fame.
But in the end it’s just an act,
Their kindness is a game.

They think to score some points somehow,
They just don’t understand.
When kindness is it’s own reward,
No benefit is planned.

Some cannot see and will not hear,
The truth within their hearts.
The greater good is greater still,
When honest giving starts.

So lend a hand or give some time,
To help someone today.
And when they ask you who you are,
“Just pass it on.” you say.

Cheers, Winston
