NaPoWriMo Day 23

I was thinking about how as a species we have gone from having too little access to information, to having a surfeit of it. Along the way, precious little has been done to teach us how to critically assess everything we consume now. This poem is about that. Enjoy!

A Brief History of Information Overload

Our story starts out long ago,

‘Ere once upon a time,

Before there was a pen or page,

To capture my poor rhyme.

We shared our wisdom through our tales,

In flick’ring firelight.

Yet when we passed, much that we knew,

Was lost back to the night.

So passed one hundred thousand years,

Without the written word,

So much of what was gained was lost,

Knew only what was heard.

Then finally, some marks were made,

That could mean something more,

Ideas now could be preserved,

Much better than before.

We climbed more quickly up the hill,

Of knowledge than before,

There still were those who’d hold us back,

Said we should not know more.

They would control all of the words,

Keep them from common reach,

The worthy meaning powerful,

The only ones they’d teach.

They did succeed and much was lost,

Yet still we persevered,

For people having knowledge was,

The only thing they feared.

And then one day, a great breakthrough,

One that would change the game,

A grand machine for making books,

Ten thousand all the same.

The time had come, our knowledge could,

Belong to anyone.

Still, some would seek to hold us back,

Frightened, but not yet done.

Clung desperately and terrified,

To power they had known,

Sought to control ideas for,

They had none of their own.

Still on we struggled up the hill,

Of knowledge ‘til at last,

We paused a moment to look back,

To understand our past.

Saw most had suffered needlessly,

So some could have it all,

For some time then our only goal,

To organize their fall.

But they don’t fall, they just change names,

Change how the game is played,

No longer try to hide the words,

Ten billion works displayed.

They would drown us in all the things,

We did for so long seek,

Then we like children gorged ourselves,

Soon found our minds too weak.

Could not contain, could not conceive,

The knowledge we now had,

Then unsupported, unprepared,

Went slowly, slightly mad.

And then they gave us more and more,

Consume, consume they’d say,

No time to think, no time to judge,

That just gets in the way.

You know you want to know some more,

Just Google and you’ll see,

More answers to more questions than,

You ever thought could be.

There is a problem here and now,

The worst that we have faced,

We need to find the gems within,

The years and tons of waste.

We need to learn to think again,

Not parrot what we hear,

Use knowledge to untie the knots,

To liberate from fear.

We must now be more critical,

Of things that people say,

Not of the person saying it,

Then we would lose our way.

No, we must understand the way,

Of thinking critically,

For only then, we’ll understand,

How to make our minds free.

Come sit beside my flick’ring fire,

Come listen to my voice,

For unlike those who would control,

I’m offering a choice.

I won’t be mad if you don’t think,

The same way that I do,

I am just offering a thought,

The rest is up to you.

Cheers,

NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 17

This is for every LGBTQ+ friend, family member, acquaintance or total stranger out there. I see you. I support you. You deserve to live your life and love who you choose as who you are. Stay strong. You deserve happiness and don’t let anyone tell you different!

Free to Love, Free to Live

Not free to love, not free to live,

Their life as who they are.

Well just because the law has changed,

Don’t think we’ve come so far.

There’s still so many ways someone,

Can run somebody down.

Suck every fleck of joy from life,

Then laugh to watch them drown.

If you do not conform to what,

They claim is God’s own way.

They’ll name and shame and try to blame,

Claim it’s their right to say.

How many people have to live,

Their whole life as a lie?

How many more so wracked with shame,

That they would sooner die?

The “Gay Agenda” is a myth,

There’s no such thing my dear.

The sole agenda’s age-old lies,

And vague, unfounded fear.

Not free to love, not free to live,

I swear this is not right.

And though it’s not about me still,

I will support this fight.

NaPoWriMo Day 24

Here is the first of today’s offerings. I hope you like it. As always, let me know what you think. 😀

On God

I reach my hand up to the sky,

And try to touch God’s face.

As high as I will ever reach,

Touch only empty space.

The ceiling painting artist lied,

God’s not upon some cloud.

God lives in every one of us,

In each face in the crowd.

God lives in every blade of grass,

And every speck of life.

In my most hated enemy,

My best beloved wife.

God is in ev’ry living thing,

This is the truth I see.

In every fish, in every bloom,

In all of you and me.

God can be found in solitude,

Or crowded noisy streets.

While watching sunrise on a hill,

Or groovin’ to new beats.

Each one will find their God their way,

But this must keep in mind.

Though you may think God yours alone,

Is anyone’s to find.

So do not mock another’s path,

God lives in them the same.

No matter how they seek their truth,

Or how they call God’s name.

NaPoWriMo Day 22

No real idea where this came from. Just started putting words down and let them take the shape they wanted. It’s no less true for all that.

My Truth

There must be some comfort in faith,

in knowing what is true.

In knowing if you walk the line,

good things will come to you.

To live a life of surety,

that in the end you’ll win.

If you just follow all the rules,

renounce your every sin.

I lack that faith can’t claim a space,

that’s reserved just for me.

Can’t claim to know the will of God,

I’ll have to wait and see.

So I live life the best I can,

and try to do what’s right.

I do not claim to know the truth,

pray sometimes late at night.

If something’s there, whatever’s there,

may hear my prayers or not.

The truth is this for me at least,

Sometimes I feel forgot.

I speak into the dark and wait,

and then make up my mind.

No answer ever came to me,

my own path I did find.

But maybe that was God’s great plan,

that I should figure out.

What’s right or wrong all on my own,

and overcome my doubt.

So I still talk into the dark,

think maybe something’s there,

But I still choose the path I walk,

and my own choices bear.

NaPoWriMo Day Ten

The ongoing expressions of faith (specifically Christian) on Facebook have caught my eye again. This poem is for all those who feel obliged to tell me how great their God is.

I Believe…. That’s all you need to know.

There’s scads of Gods and Goddesses,
Enough to go around.
But when the real work needs done,
They’re nowhere to be found.

Their offerings and sacrifice
Are all they care about,
And knocking up some mortal lass,
A holy act no doubt.

But when a plague needs curing,
Or homeless to be fed.
Your deity I safely bet,
Is still at home in bed.

So worship them if that’s your thing,
I won’t get in your way.
But don’t tell me to live like you,
Or fear your judgement day.

I have my life and my beliefs,
I don’t force them on you.
So keep your faith and keep your Gods,
And I will keep mine too.

Boy Scouts of America Lifted Ban On Gays

Cue the wrathful Christians. Certain large Christian groups have already announced the end of their affiliation with the BSA. They are cutting funding, and actively encouraging to pull their children out of the Scouts. Apparently these people haven’t got a single clue what a Christian is supposed to be. Christians aren’t dosed to judge, they’re supposed to forgive.

The BSA has made the right call. In an organization which promotes respect and equality, it was becoming increasingly hard to justify a policy of exclusion. Particularly one based on a set of standards which are no longer as widely held as they once were. No matter how strong your belief, it doesn’t give you the right to attempt to coerce others to follow them. That’s exactly what some allegedly Christian organizations tried to do. For years they “encouraged” the Scouts to reject any boy who didn’t live a lie. Now that the BSA has decided to favor inclusiveness over bigotry, the bigots have gone from coercion to punishment. Who knows how many youth will never get to experience the joys of Scouting because some people want to play God and judge when God has reserved that right for His Son.

Frankly, my God is going to be more likely to judge someone who let’s their own petty prejudices hurt a child than they are a gay child. If you or your organization believe that a belief, any belief, is more important than the happiness and social development of a child, you have my pity. If anybody is going to be judged, I bet it’s not the Scouts. I bet it’s the groups that want to exclude and punish kids for not living the way you want them to.

Personally, I’m thrilled the Boy Scouts of America has lifted it’s ban on gay kids. Now let’s work on the ban on gay troop leaders. One step at a time means every step is important.

NaPoWriMo Day:8 Religious Dissenter

I’ve got a good friend who happens to be gay. He is also one of the finest human beings it has been my privilege to know. He has literally spent his life working to help others. So when I see hear people saying “God hates gays!”, or “Same sex marriage is against God’s law!”, it makes me ill. Then it makes me angry.

For all those bigoted, hateful people…… this one’s for you.

Enjoy!

Religious Dissenter

Who is this “God” whom you declaim
So loudly in the street.?
Where is your proof for all you say?
As you so proudly bleat.

Your “God says so” is such a crock
To everyone but you.
You talk of love but act from fear
In so much that you do.

With every “God hates…” that you speak
You show how wrong you are.
The God I know would surely ask
Just how you fell so far.

You sit and judge when what you quote
Says that is your God’s role.
And anyone who plays at God
Must forfeit their own soul.

But in your mind you have God’s grace
To reinterpret it.
You twist and bend the meaning there
Your “faith” to make it fit.

So keep your “faith” you have that right
But keep it far from me.
There’s too much hate too little love
There’s no God I can see.

Mr. Fischer, Mr. Huckabee, This Means You

Bryan Fischer, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and those like them have no clue how Christianity works. I’ll tell you why I say that. These are the people trying to link the Sandy Hook shootings to a lack of prayer in schools. That’s just plain stupid.

Anyone who actually takes the time to look at the Bible knows the only place Jesus needs an invitation to is a persons heart. It doesn’t say you have to pray in school, or at work, or on TV. In fact, it says quite the opposite. Jesus himself is quoted instructing his followers not to make a big public display of their faith, rather to keep their prayers private and just between them and God.

As for Mr Fischer claiming that we’ve “kicked God out of our schools”. That’s not really possible. You see God doesn’t live in our schools, or offices or even our churches. God lives in our hearts. Where ever there is someone who believes in God, God is there. You can drop a person in the deepest, darkest hole there is and carve “NO GOD ALLOWED” in ten foot high letters on every surface. If that person believes, God will be in there with them.

So Mr. Fischer, Mr. Huckabee and all those like them need to understand this. The children and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary didn’t die because they didn’t pray in class that morning. They died because a disturbed person had too easy access to guns. Not everyone believes what you do (which is a good thing in your case) so they may not want their children subjected to your beliefs every morning. They have that right.

Please stop trying to use this horrible crime to score cheap points with your fan base. Those who died were actual people, not pawns in your twisted game of religious extremism. Contrary to your nasty little delusions, you can’t kick God out of anyone else’s life. You can only kick him out of your own by being vile, self-serving, scumbags.

Mr. Fischer, Mr. Huckabee thus means you.

Cheers, Winston

It’s Illegal Stupid!

The ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice) wants everyone to sign its petition demanding that Iran free Pastor Saeed Abedini. Mr Abedini is a former Muslim who converted to Christianity and went on to become an ordained minister with the American Evangelist Association. He also became an American citizen through his marriage to an American woman.

Because Isam is the state religion of Iran, it is illegal to preach any other faith there. Very illegal. Pastor Abedini is in jail in Iran for working with an underground Christian group there. Now the ACJL are up in arms demanding his release. They are also demanding that the U.N., the U.S. State Department and everyone else also demand his release.

I’m not sure what grounds they have for demanding his release other than him being an American. Oh yeah… he’s a Christian spreading the word amongst the unbelievers. That makes him a big deal to the ACLJ. You see they are the legal arm of the empire of rabidly anti-gay, failed politician and televangelist Pat Robertson.

What does the ACLJ get up to when not attempting to rewrite the Iranian legal code? They fight against equivalent to spouse benefits for same-sex couples. They fight to keep prayer in schools (specifically Christian prayers). The ACLJ supports the funding of faith-based social services, religious proclamations in the public domain, and often equates religious expression with patriotism. ACLJ strongly opposes the right to legal, safe abortion and provides legal help to pro-life protesters who harass women seeking reproductive services. You get the idea.

So of course they’re outraged that Iran had the temerity to lock the nice Pastor up for spreading the Gospels. One somehow doubts they would have been so outraged had he been proselytizing the joys of the Hindu faith. More to the point, I don’t think anyone should be surprised or outraged by this. It’s not like that law is any kind of secret. Especially for Pastor Abedini… He’s Iranian by birth.
He traveled to Iran with the express intent of breaking their laws. He was arrested and put in jail. What about this is surprising to anyone? How is this anyone’s problem except for the pastor, his family and friends? Should Iran embrace religious freedom? That’s up to them, not the rest of the world. It’s certainly not up to Pat Robertson and his legal goonsquad.

To all those who are outraged that he was arrested for spreading Christianity in Iran there’s just one thing to remember…. It’s Illegal Stupid!

“The Beast” Is Going High Tech

John Jay High School, is part of the Northside Independent School District in Texas now requires its students to wear I’D tags with RFID chips to track students whereabouts during the school day. While some people are raising concerns about privacy, student Andrea Hernandez has a very different issue with them. Miss Hernandez believes the tags are “the mark of the Beast” as seen in the book of Revelations in the Bible.

The school has offered to issue her a tag with the chip and battery removed but this is not enough. With the support of her family, she is refusing to wear any form of ID tag issued by the government via the school. The school is being demonized in the media for allegedly threatening to expell Miss Hernandez for refusing to be tracked with an RFID chip. This is not the case.

The school district has offered a compromise, but the Hernandez family allegedly believes that “any kind of identifying badge issued by the government is the mark of the beast”. As a result, Andrea refuses to wear even the ID badge with the chip removed. That’s her right.

I don’t believe what the Hernandez family believes and that’s okay. I don’t have to share their beliefs to respect them. I would question whether either of her parents have a drivers license or social security number. Regardless of the answer to that question, what is wanted here is a little reciprocity. The Hernandez family needs to respect the school districts belief that all students need to be treated equally.

Every other student has to wear these ID tags. They have chosen to go along with the program in order to continue attending school in that district. No one is forcing Andrea to wear an ID tag. It is entirely Miss Hernandez choice. What is missing here, is the understanding that choosing not to wear the tag means choosing not to attend that school. No one is forcing her out. It’s all about the choices she is making. I’m not judging her choice as right or wrong. I simply want it acknowledged that she is the one making the decision about whether or not she will attend this school, not the school district.

Over the years I’ve attended many Bible studies and read much of the Bible. Nowhere in it is there anything to suggest that school ID cards, even ones with RFID chips are “the mark of the Beast”. It’s actually pretty clear about what that will look like. It’s nothing to do with school IDs. Unless the Bible got it wrong and the Beast is going high tech.
