NaPoWriMo Day 26

As i was sitting and wondering what to write about tonight, my dog came and asked me why we hadn’t gone to bed yet. So yes, tonight’s poem is about Ducky. Enjoy!

Our Amazing Puppy

There is a puppy that I love,

This Ducky boy so sweet,

He’s gentle and adorable,

And has the cutest feet.

He likes the cooler weather best,

The heat cannot abide,

And when the summer gets too hot,

With his AC will hide.

But give him snow, and he will nap,

On my back step with joy,

And he will face surf all around,

Then he’s one happy boy.

He’s not a Husky, Newfoundland,

Or Bernese Mountain Dog,

He’s a mostly short-haired Beagle mix,

With sense God gave a log.

That’s not to say he is not smart,

He really is quite bright,

He get’s upset if we stay up,

Past his bedtime at night.

He’ll lie there in the living room,

And give the biggest sighs,

Then he gets up, stares at you with,

The saddest puppy eyes.

He does this ‘cause he knows it works,

Just like at mealtimes,

If I am writing, doesn’t care,

Loves food much more than rhymes.

He also is the kind of pup,

Who understands so much,

Attention’s not his big demand,

Content with just a touch.

If you go near, his tail thumps,

His belly rub request,

A back rub or an ear massage,

These things he loves the best.

As long as you are near to him,

He’s happy as a clam,

He is our awesome boy and I,

Know just how blessed I am.

Cheers,

NaPoWriMo Day 14

I have a wonderful dog named Ducky. He is my buddy and I wouldn’t change him for the world. He is sleeping beside me on the couch and his snoring gave me the opening line for this verse. Who he is gave me the rest.

Enjoy!

I’m A Lucky, Ducky Dad

There is a puppy sleeping here,

He snores beside me now.

And as he sleeps I wonder that,

I am so blessed somehow.

He is an awesome friend to me,

This puppy dog of mine.

When I’m upset he always checks,

To make sure I am fine.

When I am cross or speak to harsh,

He never judges me.

He looks so sad it melts my heart,

I cannot angry be.

With his soft head upon my foot,

He sleeps now on the floor.

When he hears someone on the walk,

He rushes to the door.

He jumps around and runs about,

Like he’s gone quite insane.

He’s just so happy to see them,

I once again explain.

If you should come to visit me,

You’d better sit down quick.

So he can jump up next to you,

And give your ear a lick.

So thanks my boy for all your love,

How’d I get so lucky?

To have you come into my life,

My pup, you’re my Ducky.

Cheers, Winston

Personal Poetry Challenge Day Thirty-Nine

Just got home from a great day at the Ottawa Comiccon.  Yup, I’m that geek.  The point is, my wife and daughter were also out (Somewhere else) so our dog was home alone watching TV.  I got here just in time to be with him during a thunderstorm.  That led to today’s verse.

My Lonely Friend

A dog alone stares at the door,
And prays his doggy prayer.
That Mom and Dad will soon return
For they are out somewhere.

It’s not that he is all alone,
They have gone out before.
He likes to chill and watch TV,
But this is something more.

A storm is near the thunder comes,
Poor pup is really scared.
He knows they’d be home if they could,
Now worries how they fared,

The rain is falling harder now,
He hears it on the pane,
And all his deepest terrors now,
Run rampant through his brain.

The thunder booms then booms again,
He’s quaking now with fear.
The thunder and the rain so loud,
No car door can he hear.

But even though he heard it not,
A car is in the drive.
And then he hears the front door key,
Now his family arrive.

If he were human tears of joy,
Would cascade down his face.
But he’s a dog so he just barks,
And jumps about the place.

So when your dog is hyper when,
You have been gone a while.
Remember it’s because you’re missed,
And you are loved so smile!

Why Dog’s Love Car Rides

Last night while driving to my trailer, I realized why dogs like car rides so much. Here’s my theory.

Normally if a dog wants to experience new things, it has to get off the couch and walk around sniffing stuff. The more new things it wants to experience, the further it has to walk. Now I can’t speak for every dog, but mine has times he’d rather just sit on the couch. That’s where the car ride comes in, he gets all the smells without all the work.

A car ride is like the Internet for dogs. He gets to sit in one spot and let the world come to him. Like the Internet, he doesn’t get the full experience of the world around him, but he doesn’t have time to get bored with any of it either. When he’s had all of the world he can handle, he takes a nap without leaving his seat. Just like surfing the net at work.

What really clinched it for me was his reaction when we stopped to eat. Instead of wanting part of our supper, he was restless and fidgeted the whole time. It’s the same thing I do when I get a lousy signal on my iPhone and have to wait forever for a page to load off the Internet.

Now you know why your dog gets so excited about going for car rides. Remember though. If you drive past a dog breeder, the smells are like Internet porn for dogs. You’ve been warned.

Cheers, Winston

p.s. If you have a cat, it probably doesn’t like car rides as much. That’s because cat’s don’t care about the rest of the world. The only part they’re interested in is the part that contains them. Besides, they get their cat porn on the real Internet while you’re out.
