NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 12

Spring is here and with it a yearning to be out in it as nature wakes from it’s winter slumber. I grew up… rural… to say the least. I love my life, but sometimes I miss the more direct connection to the wild. Today’s offering speaks to that desire.

In Nature, Peace

Out in the green with growing things,

That’s where I am most free.

With trees and moss and lily pads,

That’s where I am most me.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my house,

My nice, suburban town.

But nature is my therapy,

When my life gets me down.

The scent of earth, a mossy bed,

Upon a hill of stone.

Connect me now to everything,

Though I am all alone.

I wonder have you ever watched,

A squirrel in it’s tree?

Or wind-blown waves in fields of grain?

It moves just like the sea.

Sat silent in a wood to watch,

Some grazing deer nearby.

While finches chirped and chipmunks dashed,

And clouds went drifting by?

When thunder booms across the plain,

Or sun shines on the glen.

When silent snowflakes softly fall,

You’ll see me smiling then.

A roaring wind, or gentle breeze,

Each stirs something within.

A yearning for a wilder place,

Adventures to begin.

So come with me if you’ve a mind,

Out from this place we know.

To walk the land as once it was,

Give our souls room to grow.

Cheers, Winston

NaPoWriMo 2022 Day 8

So instead of writing this verse, I was reading today. This turned out to be a good thing as it gave me the subject for today’s project. No it isn’t about procrastination… it’s about books.

On Books

A book you’ve loved is something that,

Will never fade away.

Though some details, time may obscure,

The sense of it will stay.

The way the author made you feel,

Made you give up your heart.

A certain scene or turn of phrase,

That marks your favourite part.

These are the gifts that writers give,

To those who spend their time.

Read as much with their hearts as eyes,

To seek that gift sublime.

It need not be great lit’rature,

Burdened with noble thought.

For romance, action, fantasy,

Are far more often bought.

So light the lamp and turn the page,

New dreams are waiting there.

To grasp you gently by the soul,

And take you anywhere.

I don’t expect that you will love,

Each single book you read.

For only you can choose the ones,

That fit your inner need.

If there’s a book which calls to you,

Yet critics say “It’s bad.”

Well go ahead and read it still,

Odds are you will be glad.

There’s no one else who can tell you,

Just what makes your heart sing.

So read whatever brings you joy,

And leave them do their thing.

Now if you will excuse me please,

A book is calling me.

I do not know where it will go,

Just that’s where I must be!

NaPoWriMo Day 26

So…. my muse appears to have taken somewhat of a sabbatical. I’m way behind on this with just two days to catch up. Without further ado…

On The Necessity For Space Exploration

The black so deep there is no end,

This is the road we take.

There’s all we need, all we could want,

And so this trip we make.

We claw our way up from this well,

Regardless of the cost.

The future of our race at stake,

We go or all is lost.

It may not end tomorrow night,

And prob’ly not next year.

But end it will, there is no doubt,

Each day brings it more near.

So we must go traverse the black,

Far from our childhood home,

Ensure the future of our race,

To far, and strange worlds roam.

You say there’s so much to do here,

To solve all of our woes.

The money that we spend on space,

Is better spent on those.

The truth is this it matters not,

How grand we make things here.

If this is where our race must end,

It’s all for naught I fear.

So let us go back to the moon,

From there go on to Mars.

And in some far unknown year,

Find our path to the stars.

NaPoWriMo Day 7

My wonderful wife Lynn has been listening to my poems this month and mentioned that I seem to be on a self-awareness kick. Apparently, she’s right (as she usually is).

What Price the Dream?

“Livin’ the dream.” you hear them say,

but at what price that dream?

The fancy house, the shiny car,

are they all that they seem?

We work and work to have nice things,

but things can’t hold your hand.

When all is said and all is done,

perhaps we’ll understand.

This time we have is all we have,

we spend it every day.

But in the end when it is gone,

there’s nothing we won’t pay.

But it’s too late when time is gone,

you cannot buy some more.

So all the things you spent it on,

are what your life was for.

Are you your house, your car, your toys?

Or hero to your kid.

When you look back what will you see?

Be proud of what you did?

So just make sure you spend it well,

on what you love the best.

And when it’s gone and you look back,

your choice will stand the test.

NaPoWriMo Day 5

Yes, I know that I’m posting this on day 6. At least it’s getting posted, so half-marks for that.

Be Here Now

We spend so much of every day,

caught up inside our head.

Dwelling still upon the past,

or planning far ahead.

But all the time we spend like that,

is time we are not here.

This present now is all we have,

and we should hold it dear.

Each time we think of all we’ve had,

we throw our now away.

And as we dream of what we want,

we miss out on today.

I do not say you should not plan,

or should forget the past.

Just do not give your life to them,

it’s now, be here at last.

Right now as you are reading this,

your mind is far away.

Thinking of all the other things,

that you will do today.

But you are here and it is now,

live in this time you’re in.

When you are with the ones you love,

then wandering’s a sin.

They are what is most important,

not what was said at work.

The person who is here with you,

is not your boss (That jerk!).

So don’t give past the power to,

destroy your now as well.

For re-living your pains each day,

is like a mini hell.

So be here now, be when you are,

take back your life today.

For here and now come round but once,

It’s where we all should stay.

Cheers, Winston

My Angel

Day three of NaPoWriMo. What to write today, that’s the question. Ah, I know….

You Are All I Need To See

I sit upon the shore and gaze,

out at the distant sea.

And think of all the places that,

I think I’d like to be.

But then I stop and start to think,

of all I have right here.

The life I’ve built, the home I have,

the one I hold so dear.

It’s true there’s wonders everywhere,

that I would love to see.

But there’s no joy that could compare,

to what you give to me.

I’d rather see your face each morn,

than see the Taj Mahal

For just one smile that lights your face,

I’d gladly skip it all.

So if I leave to see the world,

this much I promise you.

Where ere I go what ere I see,

each pass will be for two.
