NaPoWriMo 2026 Day 10

The World That Was

Old trees, old friends, gone now to the mill

Here where once of old I dwelt

Tall trees, strong trunks, now an empty hill

Their passing so keenly felt

Tall trees, old trees, now there’s none remain

‘Neath whose fragrant boughs I’d rest

Small trees, wind warped, claim this hill again

Ruined all that I loved best.

Those trees, my trees, friends of my childhood

Beauty gone for naught but greed

My trees, lost trees, all lost gone for good

Only want more than they need.

Shade trees, safe trees, food and shelter too

Where live now the birds and bears?

Their trees, home trees, what now will they do?

Who sees, reads these words? Who cares?

Cheers,
