What Am I?

I do a demon’s work each day

Cause stress and strife and disarray

With people’s lives I often play.

I curry favour where I can

To be noticed my only plan

So hard to say where I began.

You hear me here, you hear me there

I’m whispered, chattered everywhere

I cause good people to despair.

I’ve ruined lives, homes and careers

By trading on your basest fears

So many shedding needless tears.

I hope that you won’t play my game

I pray that you are not that lame

For Gossip is my putrid name.
